Dr Phil Smith

Alter ego for local DJ legend. Decades spent reinventing himself finds him reconfiguring pop music as Phil Smith.

And now, here’s some biographical information about Phil:

“Armed with the realisation that pop music is generally ruined by teenage girls, fashionable early adopters and Friday nights in the CBD, Dr Phil Smith (alter ego of Melbourne’s xx xxxxxx) set out to reclaim it by starting PopRocks at the Toff, a pop music night for teenage girls and fashionable early adopters on Friday nights in the CBD. While that’s only partly true, the following is a true story: Dr Phil was DJing at a Big Day Out after party when Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine made a request, to which Phil responded, ‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me’. This preceded being kicked off the decks by Soulfly’s drummer’s security to make way for Korn’s bass player, who then put on a Spice Girls CD. Such is the life of this nation’s best pop music DJ and global pioneer of the $20 tax on requests for Kanye songs and the Rihanna jar. But remember just one thing: Dr Phil doesn’t play pop music for pop music’s sake; he plays good music that just happens to be popular.”
