Sleep
Prepare for The Heaviest Hour Of Music Ever To Go Down At Meredith.
From the Wikipedia entry for ‘stoner rock’: “Stoner rock is a musical subgenre which combines elements of traditional heavy metal, psychedelic rock, blues rock, acid rock, and doom metal. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by the Californian bands Kyuss and Sleep”.
Yep that’s right. Friday evening will see the almighty lords of sludgey, demonoid rock destroy the Supernatural Sound System. We have been asking them for a few years now and now, finally, we get SLEEP!
Like a lot of underground bands in the early 90s, they signed to a major label. However – their major label debut was not a liteweight version of their former selves – it was one, one-hour-long song entitled ‘Dopesmoker’! How cool is that (the one hour track that is)? All sorts of mythology surrounds this album and according to the band most of it isn’t myth at all.
Julian Cope described their music as “the highest form of barbarian code you could ever trip out to”.
They helped invent stoner rock. Let them re-code your dreams.
